Leadership. It’s about being a good human. Period.

There are a gazillion books about leadership. Literally. A gazillion. And every year, people write new ones.

Over the years, I’ve been asked to consider writing a book on leadership. What I have said in response is, “There are already a gazillion books about leadership.”

Their response? “But not in your voice!”

Well, that has not prompted me to write an entire book about leadership.

Instead, I offer this simple statement. Leadership. It’s about being a good human. Period.

For me, it’s just that simple.

Don’t get me wrong, people find it hard to be good humans all the time. I get it. Look around. You can find some of those people. Likely in close proximity.

Heck, there are places and spaces where I’m not my best. But you’d be hard pressed to find me in a moment of being a bad human to people who have chosen me to lead.

Why? Because what I give is most likely what I’ll get back. Other good humans.

One thing leadership books do is provide us with the behaviors and characteristics of excellent leaders. And when you parse them down to the most simple and salient point, it’s about being a good human.

Think about it.

A quick review of diagrams, documents and books presenting the traits of a good leader revealed: Self-awareness. Respect. Compassion. Vision. Communication. Learning agility. Influence. Integrity. Courage. Gratitude. Resilience. Self-discipline. Accountable. Confidence. Trust. Problem-solving. Creativity. Empathy. Honesty. Growth mindset. Passion. Vulnerability. Delegation. Empowerment. Humility. Credibility. Flexibility. Consistent. Gratitude. Sincere. Active listening. Positivity. Determination. Open-mindedness. Desire. Optimism. Humor. Adaptability. Engaging. Transparency. Encouragement. Vision. Self-motivated. Enthusiasm. Grounded. Commitment. Inquisitiveness. Fair. Decisive. Inclusive. Supportive. Care. Innovative. Positive. Organized. Approachable. Team player. Authentic. Curriosity. Responsibility.

And there are more!

Would you agree that these are traits of a good human? Like combine them all into one person and would that person be considered a good human? Or, select 10 characteristics on that list and ask yourself, would this be a good human? Just 10.

I’d say, for the most part, yes.

So, my north star as I lead is to be a good human. Be good to others. Treat them as I want to be treated.

Everyone should start there. Build from there. Fill in the blanks of what’s not percolating inside of you.

It doesn’t take an advanced degree. It doesn’t take a fancy pedigree. It takes effort.

My invitation is to start by being a good human. Period.

And what better place to start. Right? You cannot lose when you start by being a good human.

That’s my leadership tip for the day. What’s yours?
