Make it New

This week I was in a meeting with a team of folx prepping for a presentation that 3 of us iin attendance have to make in a couple of weeks. I should say that we “get” to make the presentation because it’s gonna be good!

As we were running through the slides, the facilitator, Rev. Bobbi Becker, said, “Something doesn’t have to be wrong, to make it new.”

Whew! That pretty much did it for me for the rest of the day. I have used this quote several times since, sometimes just to share how profound it is to me to anyone who will listen! Days later, it still resonates in a deep way for me.

Here’s the thing about it. How often do we try to make something, or someone, wrong so that we can change it, or them? We spend countless hours, and way too many words, pointing out what’s wrong instead of simply encouraging an expansion of thought into something new.

Is there really a need to make what we don’t agree with, wrong? Could it simply be something we don’t agree with? Could it be that easy?

It’s been my experience that naming something as wrong most often puts folx on the defensive and where can you go from there? Typically, nowhere good. You end up in an endless loop of trying to prove yourself right and someone else wrong when maybe, just maybe, you could work toward something new. Something different. Heck, something better.

The next time you find yourself at an impasse of right and wrong, don’t stay there. Move along to something new. It will feel much better to and the person you disagree with.

Did someone say “win/win?”

Thank you, Rev. Bobbi. You made my week!
